इदं शरीरं शृणु सूक्ष्मसंज्ञितं
लिङ्गं त्वपञ्चीकृतभूतसम्भवम् ।
सवासनं कर्मफलानुभावकं
स्वाज्ञानतोऽनादिरुपाधिरात्मनः ॥ ९९ ॥

idaṃ śarīraṃ śṛṇu sūkṣmasaṃjñitaṃ
liṅgaṃ tvapañcīkṛtabhūtasambhavam ;
savāsanaṃ karmaphalānubhāvakaṃ
svājñānato’nādirupādhirātmanaḥ . 99 .

Translation

Listen, this is known as the subtle body, also called linga, (indicative of the Atman), originating from the unquintuplicated elements and associated with latent impressions. It enables (the jīva in his) enjoyment of the fruit of action. Because of its own nescience it is the beginningless limiting adjunct for the Atman.

Annotation

1) The adjective ‘originating from the unquintuplicated elements’ – is to indicate that it is not the eternal Atman. 2) It is (lingam) indicative of the Atman. It is so because the mind is insentient by itself but it receives the reflection of Brahman consciousness and thus perceives objects. Thus it indicates the presence of Atman. 3) This subtle body is also the store house of the latent impressions of this birth and of previous births. 4) This subtle body continues to exist in seed form even in resolution and is born again in the next creation. It gets dissolved only with the knowledge of the Self. It is this subtle body which transmigrates from one gross body to another (Jagadguru).
