Translation

With the five external senses the jīva experiences a variety of gross objects such as garlands, sandal paste, women etc., by identifying himself with the body. Hence the prominence of gross body is in the waking state.

Annotation

Identification with the body does not exist in the dream and deep sleep states. The illusory body which is projected in the dream state is distinct from the gross body of the waking state. Thus the gross body which is not present in all states cannot be the Atman (Jagadguru).
