Shloka

शरीरपोषणार्थी सन्य आत्मानं दिदृक्षते ।ग्राहं दारुधिया धृत्वा नदीं तर्तुं स इच्छति ॥ ८६ ॥

śarīrapoṣaṇārthī sanya ātmānaṃ didṛkṣate ;grāhaṃ dārudhiyā dhṛtvā nadīṃ tartuṃ sa icchati . 86 .

यःyaḥ
The person who
शरीर–पोषणार्थी सन्śarīra–poṣaṇārthī san
engaged in nourishing the body
आत्मानं दिदृक्षतेātmānaṃ didṛkṣate
desires to know Atman
सःsaḥ

धृत्वाdhṛtvā
holding on
ग्राहंgrāhaṃ
(to a) crocodile
दारु–धियाdāru–dhiyā
thinking that it is a log
गच्छतिgacchati

नदीं तर्तुंnadīṃ tartuṃ
to cross a river

Translation

The person who, engaged in nourishing the body, desires to know Atman is like the person who holds on a crocodile mistaking it for a log and attempts to cross a river.
