Shloka

आपातवैराग्यवतो मुमुक्षू -
न्भवाब्धिपारं प्रतियातुमुद्यतान् ।
आशाग्रहो मज्जयतेऽन्तराले
निगृह्य कण्ठे विनिवर्त्य वेगात् ॥ ८१ ॥

āpātavairāgyavato mumukṣū -
nbhavābdhipāraṃ pratiyātumudyatān ;
āśāgraho majjayate’ntarāle
nigṛhya kaṇṭhe vinivartya vegāt . 81 .

Anvaya

आशा–ग्रहःāśā–grahaḥ
The crocodile named greed
मज्जयतेmajjayate
drowns
मुमुक्षून्mumukṣūn
the seekers
आपात–वैराग्यवतःāpāta–vairāgyavataḥ
who have superficial dispassion
उद्यतान्udyatān
making effort
भवाब्धि–पारं प्रतियातुम्bhavābdhi–pāraṃ pratiyātum
to crossover the ocean of existence
अन्तराले निगृह्यantarāle nigṛhya
intercepting midway
कण्ठे विनिवर्त्यkaṇṭhe vinivartya
holding by the neck
वेगात्vegāt
speedily

Translation

The swift crocodile, named greed, intercepts, holds by the neck, pulls back and drowns those seekers, who with dispassion descending on them momentarily, attempt to reach the other shore of the ocean of transmigration.

Annotation

Dispassion should not be a momentary visitation on a person, due to a sudden happening like listening to a talk on Vedanta or some event in one’s personal life. It should be a product of thorough discrimination (viveka).
