Shloka

अतो विमुक्त्यै प्रयतेत विद्वा -
न्संन्यस्तबाह्यार्थसुखस्पृहः सन् ।
सन्तं महान्तं समुपेत्य देशिकं
तेनोपदिष्टार्थसमाहितात्मा ॥ ८ ॥

ato vimuktyai prayateta vidvā -
nsaṃnyastabāhyārthasukhaspṛhaḥ san ;
santaṃ mahāntaṃ samupetya deśikaṃ
tenopadiṣṭārthasamāhitātmā . 8 .

संन्यस्त–बाह्यार्थ–सुख–स्पृहःsaṃnyasta–bāhyārtha–sukha–spṛhaḥ
having given up desire for pleasures from external objects

a saint

उपदिष्ट–अर्थ–समाहित–आत्माupadiṣṭa–artha–samāhita–ātmā
fixing the mind in the teaching given

Translation

For this reason, a wise person should endeavour for liberation, having given up the desire for pleasures from external objects and having approached a learned and enlightened teacher and fixing the mind in the teaching imparted by him.

Annotation

1) The result of rituals (such as heaven etc) and pleasure from external objects are ephemeral. Hence a wise person should give up such pursuits by cultivation of dispassion. 2) It is implied that karma–yoga would lead to purification of mind, which is needed for enquiry to the nature of the Self. 3) Scriptures say that an ideal teacher should be learned in scriptures and also be a realised person. A mere scholar cannot be an ideal teacher for the seeker (Jagadguru)
