Having not vanquished the enemies and having not attained the riches of the whole world, one cannot become a king by merely saying “I am the king”.
Annotation
The enemies are the internal ones, the negative qualities described in our books. They are desire (kāma), anger (krodha), greed (lobha), deluded attachment (moha), pride (mada) and envy (mātsaryam). Bhū–śriyam – refers not to the physical mastery over the world but mastery over different levels or planes of meditation, known as yoga–bhūmi’s. Starting from the first step, the auspicious decision to seek liberation, there are seven steps mentioned in the Yoga–vasishtam. The final step is characterised by absolute freedom and renunciation of all karma–s.
