Shloka

वीणाया रूपसौन्दर्यं तन्त्रीवादनसौष्ठवम् ।प्रजारञ्जनमात्रं तन्न साम्राज्याय कल्पते ॥ ५९ ॥

vīṇāyā rūpasaundaryaṃ tantrīvādanasauṣṭhavam ;prajārañjanamātraṃ tanna sāmrājyāya kalpate . 59 .

not enough for gaining an empire

Translation

The beautiful shape of a musical instrument and the perfection in playing the strings is useful only to entertain people but not good enough to gain an empire.

Annotation

Etymologically the word rājā means a person who can make the people happy. The musician, with his musical instrument, may make people happy but it is not good enough to make him the king. Similarly, all knowledge other than the knowledge of oneness with Brahman is of little use in gaining liberation (Jagadguru).
