अस्तीति प्रत्ययो यश्च
यश्च नास्तीति वस्तुनि ।
बुद्धेरेव गुणावेतौ
न तु नित्यस्य वस्तुनः ॥ ५७३ ॥

astīti pratyayo yaśca
yaśca nāstīti vastuni ;
buddhereva guṇāvetau
na tu nityasya vastunaḥ . 573 .

Anvaya

मूढाःmūḍhāḥ
Ignorant persons
कल्पयन्तिkalpayanti
visualise
बन्धः चbandhaḥ ca
bondage
मोक्षः चmokṣaḥ ca
and liberation
बुद्धेः गुणंbuddheḥ guṇaṃ
which are in fact the property of the mind
मृषा एवmṛṣā eva
falsely
वस्तुनिvastuni
in the self
यथाyathā
just as
दृक्–आवृतिंdṛk–āvṛtiṃ
coverage (obstruction) of vision
मेघ–कृतांmegha–kṛtāṃ
caused by the cloud
रवौravau
as though in the Sun
यतःyataḥ
because
अक्षरम्akṣaram
the imperishable (Brahman)
अद्वय–असङ्ग–चिद्advaya–asaṅga–cid
is of the nature of non–dual, unattached consciousness
एकम्ekam
One

Translation

The two types of understanding – that bondage exists in Brahman (the realised person) and that it does not exist – are the properties of intellect only and not of Brahman which is the eternal reality.

Annotation

The expression ‘properties of intellect’ can be understood as buddhi–vṛtti–s, the thought modifications of the mind.
