Shloka

पत्रस्य पुष्पस्य फलस्य नाशव -
द्देहेन्द्रियप्राणधियां विनाशः ।
नैवात्मनः स्वस्य सदात्मकस्या -
नन्दाकृतेर्वृक्षवदास्त एषः ॥ ५६१ ॥

patrasya puṣpasya phalasya nāśava -
ddehendriyaprāṇadhiyāṃ vināśaḥ ;
naivātmanaḥ svasya sadātmakasyā -
nandākṛtervṛkṣavadāsta eṣaḥ . 561 .

Anvaya

पर्णंparṇaṃ
A leaf
पतति चेत्patati cet
if it falls
कुल्यायाम् वाkulyāyām vā
either in a drain
अथ नद्यांatha nadyāṃ
or in a river
शिव–क्षेत्रेśiva–kṣetre
or in the temple of Shiva
अपि चत्वरेapi catvare
or in the cross–roads
तेनtena
by that
तरोःtaroḥ
for the tree
किं नु शुभ–अशुभम्kiṃ nu śubha–aśubham
what good or bad happens?

Translation

The destruction of the body, sense organs, vital airs and mind is comparable to the destruction of the leaf, the flower and the fruit but never that of Atman, which itself is of the nature of pure existence and bliss. The Atman, like the tree, remains unaffected.

Annotation

Bondages remain strong for the unrealised person, as in the case of the unripe leaf, flower or fruit which remain strongly attached to the tree.
