Shloka

वेदशास्त्रपुराणानि भूतानि सकलान्यपि ।येनार्थवन्ति तं किं नु विज्ञातारं प्रकाशयेत् ॥ ५३५ ॥

vedaśāstrapurāṇāni bhūtāni sakalānyapi ;yenārthavanti taṃ kiṃ nu vijñātāraṃ prakāśayet . 535 .

Anvaya

यस्य तेजसाyasya tejasā
By whose (Brahman’s) light
भानुना इवbhānunā iva
as in the case of Sun
जगत् सर्वंjagat sarvaṃ
the whole universe
भासतेbhāsate
is illumined
अनात्मकम्anātmakam
the non–self
असत्asat
the unreal
तुच्छंtucchaṃ
dismissible
किं नुkiṃ nu
what indeed
तस्य अवभासकम्tasya avabhāsakam
is the illuminer of that (Brahman)?

Translation

What can illumine that knower, by which the Vedas, scriptures, puraṇa–s and all the beings become meaningful (derive their existence)?

Annotation

Vedas and scriptures become purposeful because their goal is to impart the knowledge of Brahman.
