Shloka

आरोपितं नाश्रयदूषकं भवे -
त्कदापि मूढैर्मतिदोषदूषितैः ।
नार्द्रीकरोत्यूषरभूमिभागं
मरीचिकावारिमहाप्रवाहः ॥ ४९९ ॥

āropitaṃ nāśrayadūṣakaṃ bhave -
tkadāpi mūḍhairmatidoṣadūṣitaiḥ ;
nārdrīkarotyūṣarabhūmibhāgaṃ
marīcikāvārimahāpravāhaḥ . 499 .

Translation

A superimposition made by fools, affected by mental illness, cannot negate the substratum at any time. The flow of waters from a mirage cannot moisten the saline desert land.

Annotation

Superimposition is by ignorance and hence it cannot affect the substratum, as Sri Shankara says in the commentary on Brahma Sutra (Jagadguru). The superimposition stays only as long as ignorance remains. The superimposed snake exists only so long as there is dim light.
