Translation
The teachers guide the student just like persons standing on the shore guide the sailor. A discerning person has to cross over (the river) only by the grace of God.
Annotation
The guide standing on the shore guide the sailor as to how the sail has to be maneuvered. Similarly, the teacher would impart indirect (parokṣa) knowledge. The student, by contemplation, has to attain the Brahman consciousness (cinmātra–vṛtti) and cross over the ocean of transmigration (Jagadguru).
