Shloka

वर्तमानेऽपि देहेऽस्मिंश्छायावदनुवर्तिनि ।अहन्ताममताभावो जीवन्मुक्तस्य लक्षणम् ॥ ४३२ ॥

vartamāne’pi dehe’smiṃśchāyāvadanuvartini ;ahantāmamatābhāvo jīvanmuktasya lakṣaṇam . 432 .

अस्मिन् देहेasmin dehe
While this body
वर्तमाने अपिvartamāne api
continues to exist
छायावद् अनुवर्तिनिchāyāvad anuvartini
following like a shadow
अहंताahaṃtā
egoism (the notion of self in it)

the notion of ‘mine’
अभावःabhāvaḥ

लक्षणंlakṣaṇaṃ
(is the) characteristic of
जीवन्–मुक्तस्यjīvan–muktasya
of the person who is liberated while being alive

Translation

The characteristic of a person who is liberated while being alive is that while this body continues to exist and follow like a shadow, he is devoid of the notion of self and notion of ‘mine’ in it.

Annotation

Just as a person has no notion of ‘self’ and ‘mine’ in the bodies of others, the liberated person does not have such notions even in his own body (Jagadguru). The body does not disturb him in anyway just as a shadow does not disturb a person.
