Shloka

तथा वदन्तं शरणागतं स्वं
संसारदावानलतापतप्तम् ।
निरीक्ष्य कारुण्यरसार्द्रदृष्ट्या
दद्यादभीतिं सहसा महात्मा ॥ ४३ ॥

tathā vadantaṃ śaraṇāgataṃ svaṃ
saṃsāradāvānalatāpataptam ;
nirīkṣya kāruṇyarasārdradṛṣṭyā
dadyādabhītiṃ sahasā mahātmā . 43 .

Anvaya

तथा वदन्तंtathā vadantaṃ
To him to speaks (entreats) so
स्वं शरणागतंsvaṃ śaraṇāgataṃ
who has sought shelter under him
संसार–दाव–अनल–ताप–तप्तम्saṃsāra–dāva–anala–tāpa–taptam
the person tormented by the heat of the furious flames of existence
निरीक्ष्यnirīkṣya
having glanced
कारुण्य–रस–आर्द्र–दृष्ट्याkāruṇya–rasa–ārdra–dṛṣṭyā
with eyes moistened with kindness
महात्माmahātmā
the magnanimous one (the teacher)
सहसाsahasā
immediately
दद्याद् अभीतिंdadyād abhītiṃ
has to give fearlessness (freedom from fear)

Translation

To him who entreats so, a person (the seeker) – tormented by the heat of the furious flames of existence – who has sought shelter under him the magnanimous one (the teacher), with eyes moistened with kindness, has to immediately give him freedom from fear.

Annotation

‘Magnanimous one’ – indicates that the really magnanimous teacher takes it as his duty to guide a deserving student. ‘Immediately’ – indicates that there should not be undue delay (Jagadguru).
