ajñānahṛdayagranthervināśo yadyaśeṣataḥ ;anicchorviṣayaḥ kiṃ nu pravṛtteḥ kāraṇaṃ svataḥ . 424 .

Anvaya

विनाशः यदिvināśaḥ yadi
If there is destruction
अज्ञान–हृदय–गन्थेःajñāna–hṛdaya–gantheḥ
of the knot of ignorance in the heart
अशेषतःaśeṣataḥ
with no remnant
विदुषःviduṣaḥ
for the realised person
अनिच???छोःanica???choḥ
devoid of desires
किं नुkiṃ nu
what will there be
प्रवृत्तेः कारणंpravṛtteḥ kāraṇaṃ
the cause for pursuit
स्वतःsvataḥ
by himself?

Translation

When the knot of ignorance in the heart is totally destroyed, what reason does exist for a desireless person to pursue them by himself?

Annotation

The knot in the heart is the identification with the body–mind–complex. A realised person does not have such identification and hence the knot is destroyed. He has no further desire.
