Shloka

विद्याफलं स्यादसतो निवृत्तिः
प्रवृत्तिरज्ञानफलं तदीक्षितम् ।
तज्ज्ञाज्ञयोर्यन्मृगतृष्णिकादौ
नो चेद्विदो दृष्टफलं किमस्मात् ॥ ४२३ ॥

vidyāphalaṃ syādasato nivṛttiḥ
pravṛttirajñānaphalaṃ tadīkṣitam ;
tajjñājñayoryanmṛgatṛṣṇikādau
no cedvido dṛṣṭaphalaṃ kimasmāt . 423 .

विद्या–फलम्vidyā–phalam
The fruit of knowledge
स्यात्syāt

असतः निवृत्तिःasataḥ nivṛttiḥ
withdrawal from the unreal (phenomenal)
प्रवृत्तिःpravṛttiḥ
pursuit (of unreal)
अज्ञान–फलंajñāna–phalaṃ
is the fruit of ignorance
यत् ईक्षितम् तत्yat īkṣitam tat
that which has been seen
ज्ञ–अज्ञानयोःjña–ajñānayoḥ
in the case of realised and unrealised persons

मृग–तृष्णिका–आदौmṛga–tṛṣṇikā–ādau

दृष्ट–फलं किम्dṛṣṭa–phalaṃ kim
where is the visible result?

Translation

Withdrawal from the unreal (phenomenal) happens as the fruit of knowledge. Pursuit of unreal is the fruit of ignorance. This is seen in the case of the realised and unrealised persons in the context of mirage etc. If it is not so (if such fruit were not there) where is the visible result for the realised person?

Annotation

‘Unreal’ refers to the entire visible world which is distinguished from Brahman. Pursuit of worldly things exists when the bliss of the Self is not attained (Jagadguru).
