Shloka

मायामात्रमिदं द्वैतमद्वैतं परमार्थतः ।इति ब्रूते श्रुतिः साक्षात्सुषुप्तावनुभूयते ॥ ४०६ ॥

māyāmātramidaṃ dvaitamadvaitaṃ paramārthataḥ ;iti brūte śrutiḥ sākṣātsuṣuptāvanubhūyate . 406 .

Anvaya

इदं द्वैतम्idaṃ dvaitam
This duality
माया–मात्रम्māyā–mātram
is merely due to nescience
अद्वैतंadvaitaṃ
non–duality
परम–अर्थतःparama–arthataḥ
in absolute terms
इति ब्रूतेiti brūte
thus says
श्रुतिःśrutiḥ
the scripture
अनुभूयतेanubhūyate
it is experienced
साक्षात्sākṣāt
directly
सुषुप्तौsuṣuptau
in deep sleep

Translation

Annotation

Scriptures analyse the deep sleep state in order to know the reality of the world. The mind gets resolved in the deep sleep and hence there is no cognition of external objects. Consciousness however is present even in deep sleep. The non–experience of external objects is otherwise described as experience of ignorance or nescience. The self experiences bliss during that stage, as described in the Kaivalya Upanishad. This bliss, though similar to the bliss of the enlightened person in samādhi, it is not due to enlightenment but because of nescience. Object–less bliss is the nature of Atman and hence the world presented by nescience during waking and dream states is said to be unreal.
