Shloka

दुर्वारसंसारदवाग्नितप्तं
दोधूयमानं दुरदृष्टवातैः ।
भीतं प्रपन्नं परिपाहि मृत्योः
शरण्यमन्यं यदहं न जाने ॥ ३८ ॥

durvārasaṃsāradavāgnitaptaṃ
dodhūyamānaṃ duradṛṣṭavātaiḥ ;
bhītaṃ prapannaṃ paripāhi mṛtyoḥ
śaraṇyamanyaṃ yadahaṃ na jāne . 38 .

Anvaya

दुर्वार–संसार–दवाग्नि–तप्तंdurvāra–saṃsāra–davāgni–taptaṃ
Burnt by the conflagration of transmigration
दोधूयमानंdodhūyamānaṃ
being tossed about
दुरदृष्ट–वातैःduradṛṣṭa–vātaiḥ
by winds of adversities
भीतंbhītaṃ
one who is scared
प्रपन्नंprapannaṃ
one who has sought refuge
परिपाहि मृत्योःparipāhi mṛtyoḥ
protect me from death
यत्yat
because
अन्यत् शरण्यम्anyat śaraṇyam
any other refuge
अहं न जानेahaṃ na jāne
I do not know

Translation

Protect me from death, scorched as I am by the conflagration of transmigration, am being perennially tossed about by the great winds of adversities, scared and surrendered to you. I know not any other person of refuge.

Annotation

Etymologically, the expression saṃsāra means going round and round. The human life is called saṃsāra as it is an unending cycle of births and deaths. The cycle comes to an end when a person realises his Self. A teacher is said to protect from death by imparting Self–knowledge.
