Shloka

वैराग्यबोधौ पुरुषस्य पक्षिव -
त्पक्षौ विजानीहि विचक्षण त्वम् ।
विमुक्तिसौधाग्रतलाधिरोहणं
ताभ्यां विना नान्यतरेण सिध्यति ॥ ३७५ ॥

vairāgyabodhau puruṣasya pakṣiva -
tpakṣau vijānīhi vicakṣaṇa tvam ;
vimuktisaudhāgratalādhirohaṇaṃ
tābhyāṃ vinā nānyatareṇa sidhyati . 375 .

Anvaya

वैराग्य–बोधौvairāgya–bodhau

Anvaya

ताभ्यां विनाtābhyāṃ vinā
without these two

Translation

Oh wise one! Know that, for a seeker, dispassion and realisation are like the two wings of a bird. Ascending on to the top of the mansion of liberation is not attained by any other means except these (two).

Annotation

‘Knowledge’ – is the knowledge of the Self arising from discrimination of the Self and non–self (Jagadguru). Self–purification and self–enquiry have to go together. Just as both the wings of a bird develop simultaneously, discrimination leads to dispassion and vice versa. They are mutually supporting.
