Shloka

तमाराध्य गुरुं भक्त्या प्रह्वः प्रश्रयसेवनैः ।प्रसन्नं तमनुप्राप्य पृच्छेज्ज्ञातव्यमात्मनः ॥ ३६ ॥

tamārādhya guruṃ bhaktyā prahvaḥ praśrayasevanaiḥ ;prasannaṃ tamanuprāpya pṛcchejjñātavyamātmanaḥ . 36 .

Anvaya

तम् आराध्य गुरुंtam ārādhya guruṃ
Having devoutly served the guru
भक्त्याbhaktyā
with devotion
प्रह्व–प्रश्रय–सेवनैःprahva–praśraya–sevanaiḥ
by obedience, by gentleness and service
अनुप्राप्यanuprāpya
having approached
प्रसन्नं तम्prasannaṃ tam
him who is pleased
पृच्छेत्pṛcchet
one should ask
ज्ञात्वयम् आत्मनःjñātvayam ātmanaḥ
that which has to be known about Atman

Translation

Having devotedly served the teacher with obedience, gentleness in talk and service and having pleased him so, one has to approach him and enquire about the Atman, which has to be known.

Annotation

The three qualities ‘obedience, gentleness in talk and service’ show that the student has to be pure in his mind, word and body, which are known as the three instruments (Jagadguru).
