Shloka

लक्ष्यच्युतं चेद्यदि चित्तमीष -
द्बहिर्मुखं सन्निपतेत्ततस्ततः ।
प्रमादतः प्रच्युतकेलिकन्दुकः
सोपानपङ्क्तौ पतितो यथा तथा ॥ ३२६ ॥

lakṣyacyutaṃ cedyadi cittamīṣa -
dbahirmukhaṃ sannipatettatastataḥ ;
pramādataḥ pracyutakelikandukaḥ
sopānapaṅktau patito yathā tathā . 326 .

लक्ष्य–च्युतं चेत्lakṣya–cyutaṃ cet
if deviates from the goal
ईषत्īṣat
(even) a little bit
बहिः–मुखं सन्bahiḥ–mukhaṃ san
by becoming externally oriented
निपतेत्nipatet
(it) falls
ततः ततःtataḥ tataḥ
in several ways
यथाyathā
just as
प्रच्युत–केलि–कन्दुकःpracyuta–keli–kandukaḥ
a hand ball slipping (from hand)
प्रमादतःpramādataḥ
inadvertently

सोपान–पङ्क्तौsopāna–paṅktau
on the stairway
तथाtathā
in that manner

Translation

If the intellect, by external orientation, deviates even a little bit from its goal, it falls in several ways just as a hand ball slipping from hand and falling on the stairway goes down and down.

Annotation

The term ‘goal’ refers to Brahman. The term ‘fallen’ means getting attracted towards non–self. The hand ball fallen on the stairway goes down and down and becomes difficult to retrieve (Jagadguru).
