Shloka

सन्त्यन्ये प्रतिबन्धाः पुंसः संसारहेतवो दृष्टाः ।तेषामेषां मूलं प्रथमविकारो भवत्यहङ्कारः ॥ २९९ ॥

santyanye pratibandhāḥ puṃsaḥ saṃsārahetavo dṛṣṭāḥ ;teṣāmeṣāṃ mūlaṃ prathamavikāro bhavatyahaṅkāraḥ . 299 .

Anvaya

पुंसःpuṃsaḥ
For a person (the seeker)
सन्तिsanti
there exist
अन्ये प्रतिबन्धाःanye pratibandhāḥ
other obstacles
संसार–हेतवःsaṃsāra–hetavaḥ
which are the cause of transmigration
दृष्टाःdṛṣṭāḥ
seen
तेषाम् एषांteṣām eṣāṃ
Of these (obstacles)
भवति मूलंbhavati mūlaṃ
becomes the root cause
प्रथम–विकारःprathama–vikāraḥ
is the first mutation
अहङ्कारःahaṅkāraḥ
the ego sense

Translation

Several other obstacles, which are the cause of transmigration of a person, are seen to exist. The first mutation, the ego sense is the root cause of all these obstacles.

Annotation

The expression ‘other obstacles’ refers to desire, hatred etc., which are apart from the ego sense. The ego sense is the first mutation of nescience (Jagadguru).
