Shloka

अहं ममेति यो भावो देहाक्षादावनात्मनि ।अध्यासोऽयं निरस्तव्यो विदुषा स्वात्मनिष्ठया ॥ २६९ ॥

ahaṃ mameti yo bhāvo dehākṣādāvanātmani ;adhyāso’yaṃ nirastavyo viduṣā svātmaniṣṭhayā . 269 .

Anvaya

अहं ममahaṃ mama
‘I’, ‘mine’
इति यः भावःiti yaḥ bhāvaḥ
the notion which exists so
देह–अक्ष–आदौdeha–akṣa–ādau
in the body, sense organs etc
अनात्मनिanātmani
(which are) the non–self
अध्यासः अयंadhyāsaḥ ayaṃ
this is false attribution
निरस्तव्यःnirastavyaḥ
has to be rejected
विदुषाviduṣā
by a wise person
स्व–आत्म–निष्ठयाsva–ātma–niṣṭhayā
by abiding in the Atman

Translation

The notion of ‘I’, ‘mine’, which exists in relation to the body, sense organs etc., which are the non–self, is a wrong attribution. It has to be negated by a wise person by abiding in the Atman.

Annotation

1) ‘the body and sense organs’ – indicate the vital air, mind and the intellect. 2) ‘Wise person’ – refers to a person who has accomplished the three tier process of listening, logical validation and internalisation.
