Shloka

तत्साक्षिकं भवेत्तत्तद्यद्यद्येनानुभूयते ।कस्याप्यननुभूतार्थे साक्षित्वं नोपयुज्यते ॥ २१७ ॥

tatsākṣikaṃ bhavettattadyadyadyenānubhūyate ;kasyāpyananubhūtārthe sākṣitvaṃ nopayujyate . 217 .

Anvaya

यद् यद्yad yad
Whatever
येन अनुभूयतेyena anubhūyate
is experienced by someone
तद्–तद्tad–tad
all that
तत्–साक्षिकं भवेत्tat–sākṣikaṃ bhavet
will have him as its witness
कस्य अपिkasya api
for anyone
अननुभूतार्थेananubhūtārthe
in a thing not experienced
साक्षित्वं न उपपद्यतेsākṣitvaṃ na upapadyate
It is illogical to call him a witness

Translation

Whatever is experienced by someone, all such (which is seen) will have him as the witness. It is illogical to call a person a witness in a thing which he has not experienced.

Annotation

It was said by the student (verse 212) that he was unable to see anything other than non–existence, implying that he is a witness to such non–existence. As the witness to such non–existence you are that Self, says the teacher. We do not call a person a witness for a thing which is not experienced by him (Jagadguru).
