Shloka

सोऽयं नित्यानित्यवस्तुविवेकः समुदाहृतः ।तद्वैराग्यं जुगुप्सा या दर्शनश्रवणादिभिः ॥ २१ ॥

so’yaṃ nityānityavastuvivekaḥ samudāhṛtaḥ ;tadvairāgyaṃ jugupsā yā darśanaśravaṇādibhiḥ . 21 .

Anvaya

तद् हि वैराग्यंtad hi vairāgyaṃ
That is dispassion
जुगुप्सा याjugupsā yā
which is the sense of disgust
दर्शन–श्रवण–आदिभिःdarśana–śravaṇa–ādibhiḥ
by observation and hearing (from scripture)
अनित्येanitye
in the ephemeral
भोग–वस्तुनिbhoga–vastuni
objects of enjoyment
देह–आदि–ब्रह्म–पर्यन्तेdeha–ādi–brahma–paryante
starting from body to the status of Hiranyagarbha (the creator)

Translation

Disgust, arising from observation and learning (from others), in all objects of pleasure – starting from the body up to the creator Brahmā – is known as vairāgyam (dispassion)

Annotation

Brahmā (the creator) mentioned here is different from the Supreme Reality Brahman. Brahmā is a manifestation of the creative energy of Brahman and he has a life period. He has attributes such as creation, sustenance and dissolution; whereas Brahman is beyond such attributes.
