Shloka

जलं पङ्कवदस्पष्टं ??ङ्कापाये जलं स्फुटम् ।यथा भाति तथात्मापि दोषाभावे स्फुटप्रभः ॥ २०६ ॥

jalaṃ paṅkavadaspaṣṭaṃ ??ṅkāpāye jalaṃ sphuṭam ;yathā bhāti tathātmāpi doṣābhāve sphuṭaprabhaḥ . 206 .

Anvaya

जलं पङ्कवद्jalaṃ paṅkavad
Water associated with mud
अस्पष्टंaspaṣṭaṃ
unclear
पङ्क–अपायेpaṅka–apāye
devoid of mud
जलं स्फुटंjalaṃ sphuṭaṃ
the water is clear
यथा भातिyathā bhāti
just as it shines so
तथाtathā
likewise
आत्मा अपिātmā api
even the Atman
दोष–अभावेdoṣa–abhāve
when the impurities are removed
स्फुट–प्रभःsphuṭa–prabhaḥ
very clearly shines

Translation

Water associated with mud is unclear but devoid of mud it becomes clear. In a similar way, the Atman shines bright when the impurities (of the mind) are removed (by viveka, analysis).

Annotation

‘Impurities’ – refer to the false knowledge, followed by identification and consequent qualities like desire, anger, hatred etc., Atman can be known only by a pure mind.
