Translation
Clear knowledge of the inner–most real Self is attained only after the unreal Self (body sheath etc.,) is negated. Hence the negation of that unreal Self, the ego, has to be done well (effectively).
Annotation
‘sad–ātmanaḥ’ – refers to the supreme Self which cannot be negated at any time. ‘Negation of false self’ – refers to negation of the body sheath, vital sheath etc. Negation means rejection of the sheaths as non–self. This is done by viveka (Jagadguru).
