Shloka

साधनान्यत्र चत्वारि कथितानि मनीषिभिः ।येषु सत्स्वेव सन्निष्ठा यदभावे न सिध्यति ॥ १८ ॥

sādhanānyatra catvāri kathitāni manīṣibhiḥ ;yeṣu satsveva sanniṣṭhā yadabhāve na sidhyati . 18 .

Translation

In this context four means are told by the wiseBy having them alone a person attains abidance in Brahman and by not having them it is not attained

Annotation

1) It is common knowledge that an effect such as pot comes from a cause such as clay. Effect does not exist in the absence of a cause. Similarly, one has to enquire into the cause for this universe. Such enquiry has four pre–requisites, which are mentioned in the Upanishads. These are being explained in the following verses (Jagadguru). The word ‘niṣṭhā’ is to be firmly abiding in something. Here sat–niṣṭhā means abidance in Brahman.
