Shloka

विवेकिनो विरक्तस्य शमादिगुणशालिनः ।मुमुक्षोरेव हि ब्रह्मजिज्ञासायोग्यता मता ॥ १७ ॥

vivekino viraktasya śamādiguṇaśālinaḥ ;mumukṣoreva hi brahmajijñāsāyogyatā matā . 17 .

Anvaya

विवेकिनःvivekinaḥ
For a person of discrimination
विरक्तस्यviraktasya
for one who is dispassionate
शम–आदि–गुण–शालिनःśama–ādi–guṇa–śālinaḥ
for one who is equipped with virtues like control of mind etc
मुमुक्षोःmumukṣoḥ
for one who has deep desire for liberation
एव हिeva hi
to such person only
ब्रह्म–जिज्ञासाbrahma–jijñāsā
the desire to know Brahman
योग्यताyogyatā
competence
माताmātā
is held so

Translation

It is laid down that eligibility for enquiry into the nature of Brahman is only for a person of discrimination, one who has dispassion, one equipped with qualities like restraint of mind and one who has deep desire for liberation

Annotation

Discrimination leads to dispassion.
