Shloka

मनो नाम महाव्याघ्रो विषयारण्यभूमिषु ।चरत्यत्र न गच्छन्तु साधवो ये मुमुक्षवः ॥ १७८ ॥

mano nāma mahāvyāghro viṣayāraṇyabhūmiṣu ;caratyatra na gacchantu sādhavo ye mumukṣavaḥ . 178 .

Anvaya

महा–व्याघ्रःmahā–vyāghraḥ
The mighty tiger
मनः नामmanaḥ nāma
named mind
चरतिcarati
prowls
विषय–अरण्य–भूमिषुviṣaya–araṇya–bhūmiṣu
in the wild fields of (sense) objects
अत्र न गच्छन्तुatra na gacchantu
do not go there
साधवःsādhavaḥ
oh seekers

Anvaya

ये मुमुक्षवःye mumukṣavaḥ
those who are seekers of liberation

Translation

The mighty tiger named mind prowls in the wild fields of sense objects. May you not go there, oh seekers of liberation.

Annotation

The sense organs are externally oriented as the scripture says (Katha–Up 2–1–1) and move towards objects as water gravitates towards a low land. The same scripture says that some rare person would turn the senses inward and finds Atman (Jagadguru).
