Shloka

मेधावी पुरुषो विद्वानूहापोहविचक्षणः ।अधिकार्यात्मविद्यायामुक्तलक्षणलक्षितः ॥ १६ ॥

medhāvī puruṣo vidvānūhāpohavicakṣaṇaḥ ;adhikāryātmavidyāyāmuktalakṣaṇalakṣitaḥ . 16 .

Anvaya

मेधावी पुरुषःmedhāvī puruṣaḥ
A person of retentive mind
विद्वान्vidvān
one learned in scriptures
ऊहा–अपोह–विचक्षणःūhā–apoha–vicakṣaṇaḥ
one who has ability to visualise and conceptualise things
अधिकारीadhikārī
is the competent person
आत्म–विद्यायाम्ātma–vidyāyām
in the study of the Self
उक्त–लक्षण–लक्षितैःukta–lakṣaṇa–lakṣitaiḥ
one who is characterised by the above qualities

Translation

A person of retentive mind, learned in scriptures, having ability to visualise and conceptualise and a person endowed with above said qualities (in verses to ) is the person eligible for the knowledge of the Self.

Annotation

ūhā–apoha–vicakṣaṇaḥ implies a person with knowledge of logic and mimamsa. These two sciences give the conceptual ability needed for enquiry (Jagadguru).
