Shloka

ज्ञानेन्द्रियाणि च मनश्च मनोमयः स्या -
त्कोशो ममाहमिति वस्तुविकल्पहेतुः ।
संज्ञादिभेदकलनाकलितो बलीयां -
स्तत्पूर्वकोशमनुपूर्य विजृम्भते यः ॥ १६९ ॥

jñānendriyāṇi ca manaśca manomayaḥ syā -
tkośo mamāhamiti vastuvikalpahetuḥ ;
saṃjñādibhedakalanākalito balīyāṃ -
statpūrvakośamanupūrya vijṛmbhate yaḥ . 169 .

Anvaya

ज्ञान–इन्द्रियाणि चjñāna–indriyāṇi ca
The five sense organs
मनः चmanaḥ ca
and the mind
मनो–मयः कोशः स्यात्mano–mayaḥ kośaḥ syāt

Translation

The five sense organs and the mind constitute the mental sheath. It is the cause for visualising plurality such as ‘I’ and ‘mine’ and names (and forms). It is very strong and moves unbridled, having permeated its predecessor sheath.

Annotation

The five sense organs of action individually evolve from the sattva component of five elements and the mind evolves from the collective sattva component of five elements. This sheath gives knowledge such as “I see, I touch, I like it, I dislike it, I am scared etc.,”. By this false ego sense it conceals the Atman. All mind modifications such as love, hate, fear etc., are in this sheath. Bondage and liberation depend on this sheath (Jagadguru).
