Shloka

देहात्मधीरेव नृणामसद्धियां
जन्मादिदुःखप्रभवस्य बीजम् ।
यतस्ततस्त्वं जहि तां प्रयत्ना -
त्त्यक्ते तु चित्ते न पुनर्भवाशा ॥ १६६ ॥

dehātmadhīreva nṛṇāmasaddhiyāṃ
janmādiduḥkhaprabhavasya bījam ;
yatastatastvaṃ jahi tāṃ prayatnā -
ttyakte tu citte na punarbhavāśā . 166 .

Anvaya

नृणाम् असद्–धियांnṛṇām asad–dhiyāṃ
For the persons whose minds seek the unreal things
देह–आत्म–धीः एवdeha–ātma–dhīḥ eva
it is only the notion of body as self
बीजम्bījam
is the seed
जन्मादि–दुःख–प्रभवस्यjanmādi–duḥkha–prabhavasya
for the origin of sorrow such as birth (death) etc
यतःyataḥ
because it is so
ततःtataḥ
therefore
त्वम्tvam
you
जहिjahi
give up
ताम्tām
that (such wrong understanding)
प्रयत्नात्prayatnāt
by effort
चित्ते त्यक्ते तुcitte tyakte tu
when it is given up in the mind
न पुनः–भव–आशाna punaḥ–bhava–āśā
there exists no scope for re–birth

Translation

The idea that body is the self is itself the seed for the origin of sorrow such as birth (death) etc., for the people whose minds seek unreal things. As it is so, give up such (wrong) understanding by effort. When it is given up in the mind there exists no possibility of re–birth.

Annotation

“Unreal things” refers to objects other than Brahman. “The seed for origin of sorrow” implies that the person attributes birth and death to his Self and grieves about it. “By effort” refers to the three steps – study of Vedanta, reflection and internalisation. “Given up in the mind” implies purification of the mind by negating the idea of identification with the physical body (Jagadguru).
