Hence, the seeker has to enquire into the nature of the Self having approached a guru, the best among the realised ones and a person who is the ocean of compassion
Annotation
The Guru Gita defines the word guru as follows: The letter gu means darkness and the letter ru denotes the person who removes it. Thus guru is a person to removes the ignorance in a person. Ignorance, in this case is ignorance about the nature of the Self (Jagadguru). The word ātmavastu refers to the ‘Self’ which is the subject for enquiry in Vedanta. Investigation is to find out whether the body is the Self or whether the mind is Self or whether Self is something else. The teacher needs to be realised person, besides being compassionate, as he has to monitor the spiritual progress of the student.
