Shloka

कोशैरन्नमयाद्यैः पञ्चभिरात्मा न संवृतो भाति ।निजशक्तिसमुत्पन्नैः शैवलपटलैरिवाम्बु वापीस्थम् ॥ १५१ ॥

kośairannamayādyaiḥ pañcabhirātmā na saṃvṛto bhāti ;nijaśaktisamutpannaiḥ śaivalapaṭalairivāmbu vāpīstham . 151 .

Anvaya

पञ्चभिःpañcabhiḥ

कोशैः अन्नमय–आद्यैःkośaiḥ annamaya–ādyaiḥ
sheaths such as the body sheath etc
आत्माātmā
the Atman
संवृतःsaṃvṛtaḥ
is covered
न भातिna bhāti
does not shine
अम्बु इवambu iva
just as water
वापीस्थम्vāpīstham
in the well
शैवल–पटलैःśaivala–paṭalaiḥ
by the layers of moss
निज–शक्ति–समुत्पन्नैःnija–śakti–samutpannaiḥ
arising from its own potential

Translation

Atman does not manifest, being covered by the five sheaths such as the body sheath etc. It is like water in the well which is not seen when covered by the layers of moss arising from the water itself.

Annotation

‘Arising from its own potential’ – means identification with the five sheaths which arise from māyā, which is the power of Atman itself. The sheaths envelope the Atman just as the moss envelops the water (Jagadguru).
