Shloka

यो विजानाति सकलं जाग्रत्स्वप्नसुषुप्तिषु ।बुद्धितद्वृत्तिसद्भावमभावमहमित्ययम् ॥ १२८ ॥

yo vijānāti sakalaṃ jāgratsvapnasuṣuptiṣu ;buddhitadvṛttisadbhāvamabhāvamahamityayam . 128 .

Anvaya

यः विजानातिyaḥ vijānāti
That which knows
अहम् इतिaham iti
as ‘I’, the empirical ego
सकलम्sakalam
everything
जाग्रत्–स्वप्न–सुषुप्तिषुjāgrat–svapna–suṣuptiṣu
in the waking, dream and deep sleep
बुद्धि–तद्–वृत्ति–सद्भावम् अभावम्buddhi–tad–vṛtti–sadbhāvam abhāvam
the intellect (waking state), the modifications of the intellect (dream) and their absence (deep sleep)
अयम्ayam
this (Atman)

Translation

It is the Atman which knows everything as (in the guise of) the empirical ego – what all happens in the waking, dream and deep sleep. It knows the intellect, its modifications and their absence.

Annotation

In the waking state it knows things as ‘I see this, I infer this’ and so on. In the dream, the modifications of the mind (vṛtti–s) function (Jagadguru).
