distinct from the five kośa–s
Translation
There exists an entity, existing by itself, eternal, the substratum for the notion of ‘I’, which is the witness for all the three states (waking, dream and deep sleep) and which is distinct from the five sheaths.
Annotation
1) ‘By itself’ – Consciousness does not need anything else to illumine it. It is self–illumining and also illumines (knows) others. 2) The consciousness which exists by itself is the substratum for the experience of ego, but which has wrongly identified with the mind (Jagadguru).
