Translation

The unmanifest, characterised by the three guṇa–s, is known as the causal body of the Atman. Deep sleep, in which all sense activities and modifications of mind are withdrawn, is its distinguishing state.

Annotation

Nescience is present in all the three states but it is not identifiable in waking and dream states. Both mind and sense organs are active in the waking state. The mind alone is active in the dream state. In deep sleep all the above are withdrawn. Hence deep sleep alone is the stage which distinguishes nescience (Jagadguru).
