Shloka

अहङ्कारः स विज्ञेयः कर्ता भोक्ताभिमान्ययम् ।सत्त्वादिगुणयोगेनावस्थात्रितयमश्नुते ॥ १०६ ॥

ahaṅkāraḥ sa vijñeyaḥ kartā bhoktābhimānyayam ;sattvādiguṇayogenāvasthātritayamaśnute . 106 .

the three–fold states

Translation

It should be known that it is the mind which is the ego, the doer, the enjoyer, the one who identifies (with the body–mind). And this mind, by association with the guṇas such as sattva attains the three–fold states.

Annotation

The mind is the product of prakṛti, which consists of sattva, rajas and tamas. Hence with rajas it is in the waking state, with sattva it is in dream state and with tamas it attains deep sleep (Jagadguru).
