Shloka

य एषु मूढा विषयेषु बद्धा
रागोरुपाशेन सुदुर्दमेन ।
आयान्ति निर्यान्त्यध ऊर्ध्वमुच्चैः
स्वकर्मदूतेन जवेन नीताः ॥ ७७ ॥

ya eṣu mūḍhā viṣayeṣu baddhā
rāgorupāśena sudurdamena ;
āyānti niryāntyadha ūrdhvamuccaiḥ
svakarmadūtena javena nītāḥ . 77 .

येye
Those who
एषु मूढाःeṣu mūḍhāḥ
are deluded in these
विषयेषुviṣayeṣu
sense objects
बद्धाःbaddhāḥ
bound
राग–उरुपाशेनrāga–urupāśena
by the strong chord of desire
सुदुर्दमेनsudurdamena
very difficult to control
आयान्ति निर्यान्तिāyānti niryānti
they come and go
अधः उच्चैः ऊर्ध्वम्adhaḥ uccaiḥ ūrdhvam
downward and high upwards
स्व–कर्म–दूतेनsva–karma–dūtena
by one’s karma acting as the messenger
जवेन नीताःjavena nītāḥ
speedily led

Translation

Those deluded persons, who are bound to these sense objects by the irrepressible chord of desire, travel downwards and high upwards, being speedily led by their own karma acting as the messenger.

Annotation

‘Movement downwards and upwards’ – means the lower and higher worlds attained by a person by virtue of his karma.
