Shloka

पठन्तु शास्त्राणि यजन्तु देवा -
न्कुर्वन्तु कर्माणि भजन्तु देवताः ।
आत्मैक्यबोधेन विना विमुक्ति -
र्न सिध्यति ब्रह्मशतान्तरेऽपि ॥ ६ ॥

paṭhantu śāstrāṇi yajantu devā -
nkurvantu karmāṇi bhajantu devatāḥ ;
ātmaikyabodhena vinā vimukti -
rna sidhyati brahmaśatāntare’pi . 6 .

Translation

May people read scriptures, may they perform yajña–s for the deities, may they perform the rituals, may they worship gods, but liberation is not gained even in a hundred of cycles of creation, without the knowledge of oneness of Atman.

Annotation

The expression brahma śatāntare refers to the duration of time in a hundred cycles of creation. Creation is not a onetime, linear activity of the creator but it occurs in continuous cycles of creation, sustenance and dissolution. Each creation runs for a few billion years, which is the life time of that particular creator, the brahmā. This creator named brahmā is a mere manifestation in the Supreme Brahman which is of the nature of infinitely existing consciousness.
