Shloka

चलत्युपाधौ प्रतिबिम्बलौल्य -
मौपाधिकं मूढधियो नयन्ति ।
स्वबिम्बभूतं रविवद्विनिष्क्रियं
कर्तास्मि भोक्तास्मि हतोऽस्मि हेति ॥ ५०९ ॥

calatyupādhau pratibimbalaulya -
maupādhikaṃ mūḍhadhiyo nayanti ;
svabimbabhūtaṃ ravivadviniṣkriyaṃ
kartāsmi bhoktāsmi hato’smi heti . 509 .

Anvaya

न अहंna ahaṃ
I am not
कर्ता अपि वाkartā api vā
either the doer
कारयिता अपिkārayitā api
or the motivator
न अहम्na aham

भोक्ता अपि वाbhoktā api vā
either the experiencer
भोजयिता अपिbhojayitā api
or the one who enables such experience

Atman

Translation

The ignorant persons attribute the vagaries of the delimiting intellect – which are like the movements of the image (of the Sun in water bodies) – to the actionless Self which is the bimba, the object, comparable to the Sun. The ignorant cry out – ‘I am the doer’, ‘I am the enjoyer’, ‘I am killed, alas’ and so on.

Annotation

When the waters move, the image of the Sun moves whereas the Sun has no movement. Similarly, when the intellect, which is the delimiting adjunct, undergoes changes such as joy, sorrow etc., the ignorant persons attribute such joy and happiness to the Self, which is action–less. Such attribution is due to identification with the body–mind–complex (Jagadguru).
