Shloka

सत्याभिसन्धानरतो विमुक्तो
महत्त्वमात्मीयमुपैति नित्यम् ।
मिथ्याभिसन्धानरतस्तु नश्ये -
द्दृष्टं तदेतद्यदचोरचोरयोः ॥ ३३३ ॥

satyābhisandhānarato vimukto
mahattvamātmīyamupaiti nityam ;
mithyābhisandhānaratastu naśye -
ddṛṣṭaṃ tadetadyadacoracorayoḥ . 333 .

Anvaya

सत्य–अभिसंन्धान–रतःsatya–abhisaṃndhāna–rataḥ
One who is firm in the vision of Reality
विमुक्तःvimuktaḥ
liberated
उपैतिupaiti
attains
आत्मीयम् महत्त्वम्ātmīyam mahattvam
one’s pre–eminence of Self
नित्यम्nityam
(which is) eternal
मित्या–अभिसंधान–रतः तुmityā–abhisaṃdhāna–rataḥ tu
On the other hand one who pursues the unreal
नश्येद्naśyed
perishes
दृष्टं तद् एतद्dṛṣṭaṃ tad etad
that is seen
यद्–अचोर–चोरयोःyad–acora–corayoḥ
in the context of a thief and a non–thief

Translation

A person who is firm in his vision of Reality gets liberated and attains one’s pre–eminence of Self which is eternal. On the other hand, the person who pursues the unreal perishes as seen in the case of a thief and a non–thief.

Annotation

The example of a thief and non–thief is from Ch–6–16 of the Chandogya Upanishad. The ordeal by fire is mentioned in the Upanishad. The hand of a thief who catches hold of a hot iron implement gets burnt whereas the hand of a non–thief does not get burnt. A person who pursues unreal objects gets entangled in a series of such pursuits and attains sorrows one after the other (Jagadguru).
