Shloka

निगृह्य शत्रोरहमोऽवकाशः
क्वचिन्न देयो विषयानुचिन्तया ।
स एव सञ्जीवनहेतुरस्य
प्रक्षीणजम्बीरतरोरिवाम्बु ॥ ३११ ॥

nigṛhya śatrorahamo’vakāśaḥ
kvacinna deyo viṣayānucintayā ;
sa eva sañjīvanaheturasya
prakṣīṇajambīratarorivāmbu . 311 .

Anvaya

निगृह्यnigṛhya
Having eradicated (the ego)
विषय–अनुचिन्तयाviṣaya–anucintayā
by contemplation on sense objects
अवकाशःavakāśaḥ
space (scope)
क्वचित् न देयःkvacit na deyaḥ
should never be given
शत्रोः अहमःśatroḥ ahamaḥ
to the ego which is the enemy
स एवsa eva
That alone
संजीवन–हेतुःsaṃjīvana–hetuḥ
is the cause of revival
अस्यasya
of this (ego)
अम्बु इवambu iva
just as water
प्रक्षीण–जम्बीर–तरोःprakṣīṇa–jambīra–taroḥ
for a nearly dried up lemon tree

Translation

Having once eradicated the ego, no scope should again be given to ego, which is the enemy, by contemplation on sense objects. Such contemplation alone is the cause of revival of ego just as water for a nearly dried up lemon tree.

Annotation

Contemplation on sense objects leads to forgetting the real nature of the Self. As a result, the seeker identifies himself again with the ego (Jagadguru).
