Shloka

विकारिणां सर्वविकारवेत्ता
नित्योऽविकारो भवितुं समर्हति ।
मनोरथस्वप्नसुषुप्तिषु स्फुटं
पुनः पुनर्दृष्टमसत्त्वमेतयोः ॥ २९६ ॥

vikāriṇāṃ sarvavikāravettā
nityo’vikāro bhavituṃ samarhati ;
manorathasvapnasuṣuptiṣu sphuṭaṃ
punaḥ punardṛṣṭamasattvametayoḥ . 296 .

Anvaya

सर्व–विकार–वेत्ताsarva–vikāra–vettā
The knower of all changes (mutations)
विकारिणांvikāriṇāṃ
of all the changing objects
नित्यःnityaḥ
eternal
अविकारःavikāraḥ
unchanging
भवितुं सम्–अर्हतिbhavituṃ sam–arhati
deserves to be known so
मनो–रथ–स्वप्न–सुषुप्तिषुmano–ratha–svapna–suṣuptiṣu
In reverie, dream and deep sleep
स्फुटंsphuṭaṃ
clearly
पुनः पुनःpunaḥ punaḥ
again and again
दृष्टम् असत्त्वम्dṛṣṭam asattvam
the unreality is seen
एतयोःetayoḥ
of these two (the body and the ego, the gross and the subtle body)

Translation

That which is the knower of all changes of all changing objects deserves to be known as the eternal and unchanging. The unreality of the body and the ego is clearly seen again and again in reverie, dream and deep sleep.

Annotation

1) The word ‘changes’ refers to the bodily mutations such as birth, growth, old age etc. 2) The absent minded person or a person in deep sleep does not have awareness of the body. The Atman which is the witness of all is present at all times (Jagadguru).
