Shloka

अहङ्कारादिदेहान्तान्बन्धानज्ञानकल्पितान् ।स्वस्वरूपावबोधेन मोक्तुमिच्छा मुमुक्षुता ॥ २८ ॥

ahaṅkārādidehāntānbandhānajñānakalpitān ;svasvarūpāvabodhena moktumicchā mumukṣutā . 28 .

Anvaya

अहङ्कार–आदिahaṅkāra–ādi
Commencing with the ego
देह–अन्तान्deha–antān
and ending with the body
बन्धान्bandhān
the bondages
अज्ञान–कल्पितान्ajñāna–kalpitān
visualised by ignorance
स्व–स्वरूप–अवबोधेनsva–svarūpa–avabodhena
by understanding one’s own nature
मोक्तुम् इच्छाmoktum icchā
the desire to get freed
मुमुक्षुताmumukṣutā
(is called) the desire for liberation

Translation

The desire, arising from an understanding of the Self, to get freed from the bondages – starting from the sense of ego down to the body – caused by ignorance, is called mumukṣutā, the desire for freedom.

Annotation

Here, ‘the understanding of the Self’ is merely at the intellectual level for the seeker. The sense of ego is the notion of ‘I’ and ‘mine’ in the body–mind–complex. It assumes the sense of being the doer and enjoyer of things (Jagadguru).
