Shloka

संसारकारागृहमोक्षमिच्छो -
रयोमयं पादनिबद्धशृङ्खलम् ।
वदन्ति तज्ज्ञाः पटुवासनात्रयं
योऽस्माद्विमुक्तः समुपैति मुक्तिम् ॥ २७३ ॥

saṃsārakārāgṛhamokṣamiccho -
rayomayaṃ pādanibaddhaśṛṅkhalam ;
vadanti tajjñāḥ paṭuvāsanātrayaṃ
yo’smādvimuktaḥ samupaiti muktim . 273 .

Anvaya

संसार–कारागृह–मोक्षम्–इच्छोःsaṃsāra–kārāgṛha–mokṣam–icchoḥ
For a person desiring to be freed from the prison of transmigration
अयो–मयंayo–mayaṃ
made of iron
पाद–निबद्ध–शृङ्खलम्pāda–nibaddha–śṛṅkhalam
the shackles tied to the feet
तद्–ज्ञाःtad–jñāḥ
the knowers of Brahman
वदन्तिvadanti
tell
पटुpaṭu
strong
वासना–त्रयंvāsanā–trayaṃ
the three–fold tendencies (obsessions)
यःyaḥ
the person who
अस्माद् विमुक्तःasmād vimuktaḥ
gets freed from this
समुपैतिsamupaiti
attains
मुक्तिम्muktim
liberation

Translation

Those who know Brahman say that these three tendencies are like strong iron shackles tied to the feet of a person desiring to be freed from the prison of transmigration. Only a person who gets freed from this attains liberation.
