Translation
Restricting the two types of organs (sense organs and organs of action) in their own respective sense centres, having turned them back from the sense objects, is called dama. An exemplary uparati (withdrawal) is that in which even the thought does not hold on to sense objects.
Annotation
The word vṛtti is usually translated as ‘a modification of mind’ or ‘a mode of mind’. It is a thought frame which occurs in a mind when an object is perceived. The mind takes the form of that object at that moment, which is called the thought frame (vṛtti) relating to the object. Śama and dama may not totally ensure wandering of mind on sense objects. Uparati is stoppage of such wandering.
