Shloka

यदि सत्यं भवेद्विश्वं सुषुप्तावुपलभ्यताम् ।यन्नोपलभ्यते किञ्चिदतोऽसत्स्वप्नवन्मृषा ॥ २३६ ॥

yadi satyaṃ bhavedviśvaṃ suṣuptāvupalabhyatām ;yannopalabhyate kiñcidato’satsvapnavanmṛṣā . 236 .

Anvaya

यदिyadi
If
विश्वंviśvaṃ
the universe
सत्यं भवेद्satyaṃ bhaved
is real
सुषुप्तौsuṣuptau
in deep sleep
उपलभ्यताम्upalabhyatām
let it be known
यत्yat
because
न किञ्चिद् उपलभ्यतेna kiñcid upalabhyate
it is not known even a bit
अतःataḥ
therefore
असत्asat
it is unreal
स्वप्नवत् मृषाsvapnavat mṛṣā
unreal like a dream

Translation

Let the universe known in deep sleep if it were to be real. Because it is not known even a little bit, it therefore unreal, like a dream.

Annotation

1) A thing which is real should always be perceived. The universe is seen only in the waking state but not in deep sleep. 2) mṛṣā – means that it is not totally unreal like the horn of a hare but it is something which is seen and negated (Jagadguru).
