Shloka

देहादिसर्वविषये परिकल्प्य रागं
बध्नाति तेन पुरुषं पशुवद्गुणेन ।
वैरस्यमत्र विषवत्सुविधाय पश्चा -
देनं विमोचयति तन्मन एव बन्धात् ॥ १७५ ॥

dehādisarvaviṣaye parikalpya rāgaṃ
badhnāti tena puruṣaṃ paśuvadguṇena ;
vairasyamatra viṣavatsuvidhāya paścā -
denaṃ vimocayati tanmana eva bandhāt . 175 .

Anvaya

रागं परिकल्प्यrāgaṃ parikalpya
Having created attachment
देह–आदि–सर्व–विषयेdeha–ādi–sarva–viṣaye
in all objects such as the body
तेनtena
by that
बध्नाति पुरुषंbadhnāti puruṣaṃ
binds the person
पशुवत्paśuvat
like an animal (tethered to a post)
गुणेनguṇena

Translation

Having created attachment in all objects such as the body, the mind binds a person like an animal tethered to a post by a rope. Later this selfsame mind creates strong distaste – like towards poison – towards the world of objects and releases the person from bondage.

Annotation

‘Body etc’ includes sense objects, relatives etc (Jagadguru). The word ‘paśu’ is significantly used. It is derived from the root paśa, in the sense of binding. All beings are bound and hence called paśu. The word ‘guṇa’ has two meanings – a rope and a guṇa such as sattva etc. These guṇa–s are known to bind a person.
